1923 Ruggles Canopied Top Express Truck | RM Sotheby's | The Hershey Auction

Engineer and inventor Frank W. Ruggles of Hardwick, Massachusetts, was the engineering force behind the Republic Motor Truck Company of Alma, Michigan, one of the most successful early manufacturers of commercial trucks in the United States, initially founded in 1913 as the Alma Motor Truck Company. Ruggles held various patents for truck components, including a two-cylinder engine, and his efforts involving automotive technology extend back to at least 1905. The one-and-a-half-ton and two-ton Republic trucks that Ruggles helped create proved so popular with farmers and commercial operations that by 1916 the company had reportedly become the largest exclusive manufacturer of trucks in the world. Rapid expansion combined with a post-World War I economic downturn and thousands of wartime trucks flooding the market prompted Republic management to restructure in 1920 and Ruggles, who had ascended to the position of president by then, departed the company.
Ever the intrepid engineer, he would continue securing patents for new technology and founded his own firm in Saginaw, Michigan, in April 1921, taking over a factory from the Saginaw Shipbuilding Company in exchange for $500,000 in stock. Ruggles Motor Truck Company produced vehicles ranging from three-quarter to three-ton capacity, as well as a bus chassis capable of carrying 16 to 29 passengers. The company operated successfully through 1926, opening an additional assembly plant in London, Ontario, and reportedly providing trucks to several municipalities and the US Navy. A saturated market, combined with a significant loss of inventory during a hurricane in Coral Gables, Florida, sent the company into receivership by 1927. Management forced Ruggles out shortly thereafter and the operation was fully shuttered by 1928.
Surviving Ruggles trucks are incredibly rare. The vehicle offered here is a representation of a “Go Getter” Canopied Top Express, depicted in an illustration in the Standard Catalog of American Light-Duty Trucks. Though it does not bear a definitive chassis number, the inline four-cylinder engine features date castings from March or April 1923. The radiator shroud bears Ruggles’ distinctive red logo, as does the rear axle housing.
The finely crafted wooden stake bed and full-length canopy are standout features that complement the steel body, attractively finished in blue. With authentic period details and features, it remains a compelling representation of an obscure, early commercial truck from the era of small American independent manufacturers, ideal for showing at events, driving in parades, or simply enjoying on a farm or estate in the spirit of its original purpose.
