A splendid example of the beautiful 1940 Buick

Buick’s 1940 line was attractive, indeed, with more streamlined bodywork that blended the headlights fully into the fenders for the first time. In addition, they now featured modern sealed-beam headlights, accompanied by the wonderfully named Fore-N-Aft Flash-Way turn signals. In typical Buick fashion, each car was also strongly engineered, with great attention to build quality. The suspension was redesigned to provide a better ride and handling, with the result being that any of the Buick lines was a pleasure to drive. This included the Super, positioned just above the entry-level Special and featuring upgraded, more luxurious trim, both inside and out.

Production of the Super Convertible Coupe, a sought-after body style, was 4,804 cars, relatively few of which survived the extended use many received during World War II. The Super Convertible Coupe offered here was acquired by Michael Leith several years ago from longtime collector Alan Egelseer of Hustisford, Wisconsin, well-known as a purveyor of NOS parts for various antique automobiles, and for his eye for quality examples. It was restored some time ago in the striking period-correct color combination of Sequoia Cream over red leather, with a black canvas top bound in red—a gorgeous combination and one iconic to Buicks of this era. Amply accessorized, it is equipped with a Sonomatic push-button AM radio, dual horns, dual fog lights, grille guard, wheel trim rings, rear fender skirts, and dual exhaust.

Obviously well-kept, the car remains in very good cosmetic order. As part of The Michael Leith Collection it has been mechanically maintained to a strong standard as a fine-running and driving example—something that anyone who has had the good fortune to experience a Buick of this era on the road can testify is a most enjoyable experience.
