Racing a Willys with whitewall tyres or maybe it is an endurance test sponsored by Veedol oil (click the photo for a zoom). Why not, we have seen funnier things happen. We tried to track back Veedol and we understand they are still active, be it is in India only. Too bad, the name is still so vivid in our memory, or are we the only one thinking that? UPDATE II by Mark Dawber:"I would guess that picture of the Willys to have been taken about 1920 - judging from looking at pics found on a quick google search. It is difficult to be certain but the car appears to be parked on a board surface - maybe one of the many board speedways built in the late teens for both car and bike racing. I recall reading somewhere that in the mid 1920s when the formula for cars in the US was 91 cu. in. (1500cc) that the winner's average in one race was over 150mph - at that time about the same as the outright land speed record! The Willys certainly looks smart on those wire wheels (Houks maybe?) - they seem to have been a popular option in that period from the mid-teens to the early twenties.
Notice that the driver is wearing jodphurs and leather gaiters ( i.e. horse riding gear) - these seemed to be popular for 'sporting wear' at this time. Does anybody know why?"
UPDATE by Bart Oosterling: "They were active in Europe to at least 1982 when they published a book and a set posters showing vintage cars(!) among which a poster showing a lemon yellow Mercedes SS."
