Unidentified car impressing bystanders in mediæval Sighișoara

Letters to the editor

I received this picture that was taken at an undisclosed date in the mediæval city of Sighișoara, in which we can see an unidentified car, which I hope some of you may name.

The picture certainly dates from before or around the Great War, which affects whether Sighișoara was within the borders of Austria-Hungary (up to 1918) or Rumania (1918 onwards). Taken in front of the landmark Clock Tower which still stands unchanged today, it is interesting to observe the immortalised expressions of the bystanders. Even though at the time Sighișoara was an affluent part of Austria-Hungary and one of the most important urban settlements in Transylvania, clearly automobiles were a novelty and a rarity.

I've cleaned up the image ever so slightly, but it's probably not much help. A.I. would do better!

The town is called Schässburg in German. The car seems to me a Mercédès.

My suggestion would be a circa 1912 Benz.

I agree. However, this style was available with Benz already in 1910/11.

Are you sure that it's not Borduria?

What a delightful place! Forgive me, I thought it was a certain small town in Vulgaria. I was certain the lady on the pavement was Truly Scrumptious practising her dance.
