Our quiz was based on the lyrics of the song The Twelve Days of Christmas (carols.org), but instead of the Christmas presents in the text, we asked you to identify twelve cars. Most participants had no problems with ten of them, but two proved to be very difficult. Many thought that the car on day seven was a Stutz or a Mercer, but it was a 1909 De Tamble (click!), built in Indianapolis & Anderson, Indiana. Not many were built, so it’s a little known make.
The other problem was the truck on day twelve. We’ve seen mentioned Dennis, AEC, Maudlin, Guy, Foden and several other makes. Jean-Marie Gillen wrote: “Not being a lorry expert I relied on the internet and google, and within a few hours developed into a small British lorry connoisseur, but am still unable to identify quiz no.12 correctly!” In fact nobody had this one right and we admit it was a very obscure vehicle. It was a Garrett dating from the early 1930’s. From around 1930 until their demise in 1932 the British company Richard Garrett & Sons (who was famous for its steam engines) experimented with lorries with front-steer cabs (click!). They had a Meadows petrol engine or a Blackstone diesel engine. It never went into production and it is thought that no survivors exist.
