Future Needs Heritage (UPDATE)

Tomorrow, May 19, 2006, the new Mercedes-Benz Museum will open its doors to the public. The old museum, founded in 1923, had become too small to provide sufficient room for the exhibits. The museum will cover 20.000 sq. meters of exhibition space for the historical and new collection of Mercedes-Benz. It is located right next to the Mercedes plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, one of the cradles of the automotive industry. Not far from here, Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach developed their high-speed gasoline engine. Beginning in 1903, early Mercedes vehicles were created here and it was the site of Daimler-Benz headquarters following the merger of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft with Benz & Cie. in 1926. The museum was designed by Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos from UN Studio. According to Ben van Berkel, who also created the famous Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam, the building is based on a clover leaf, three circles overlapping each other, with an atrium in the centre. There are no stairs, only slowly sloping ramps bridging the height differences between the six level plateaus, on which there are more than 1450 exhibits, including 160 vehicles.
