First Front Wheel Drive? (UPDATES I, II, III)

Last week Friday this query was started by James Holland at the very lively newsgroup: Owners-British-cars-Pre-War (Autox.Team.Net). As you may surmise no British car survived this virtual paper war. Most people in fact didn't go further back than Citroëns 1934 Traction Avant(Citroën.mb.ca). But the moment we came up with this 1899 De Dion powered contraption, someone at the group came up with the same idea. Are you really into this prewar matter without any doubt you will come up with the slightly older 1769 Cugnot (all Cugnot ins & outs at Philippe Boursin's page). When you have any doubt of this wall-banger being an automobile, you should be aware of the fact that the Society of Automotive Historians not only has the Cugnot in their logo but also presents on a yearly basis the Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot Award (Autohistory.org) for the best autohistorical book published in the previous year. In 2002 this was The Classic Era by Beverly Rae Kimes. (Photo by editor, click for techno-indulgence)
