Best of two worlds. (UPDATE; mix-up)

A Vanden Plas bodied Mercedes-Benz 540K. Quite possible to be the only Vanden Plas bodied 540 K. One thing is sure, it is not the type of combination that is the first to pop into a man's mind when ordering a Benz. Especially in that turbulent era. However it did pop into the mind of media tycoon Randolph Hearst. Now you should know this was the exact year his son married Catherine Campbell, so he may have been in a state of mind like "...and now for something completely different". You may have the same thought this Saturday, when this very special 540 K will be sold during Hilton Head Concours d'Elegance & Motoring Festival. You can go into the details of lot 68 at the pages of the Worldwide Group Auctioneers or call

UPDATE based on information provided by Dick Trenk. Editor: we were under the impression the car was bought by Hearst Junior. While in fact it was bought by Hearst Senior at the time Junior got married.
