Michael Ware writes: In 1914 the Hamar Division of the Norwegian State Railways purchased an Armstrong Whitworth car, made in Newscastle Upon Tyne. It was converted to run on rails and in this case the flanged wheels were fitted over the original wooden artillery wheels. The steering wheel was removed and a small circular board put in its place to protect the surviving control levers including a hand throttle which was the normal method of control. The front axle has been replaced by a solid bar. Why did this railway company choose this particular British built car? What was it used for? Was it an inspection vehicle for an area manager? The vehicle is preserved in the Norwegian Railway Museum." Editors note: nothing much to find on the web in this matter. Except that at the Armstrong Siddeley clubpages (clic) under the product line-up Railcars are mentioned... ;-) (photo courtesy motormuseums.com)
