The Dutch magazine ‘Autokampioen’ ('Car Champion') just have celebrated their 75th anniversary, no other car magazine in Holland existed so long. When it started it was a succes and today it still is. But in a long history, it's unavoidable there are some darker bits as well. Not to put down anybody and certainly not today's quality magazine we selected this remarkable war-time cover, showing a BMW 328 (bmwworld.com), the model that appeared in 1936 as a roadster variant of the 326 limousine (autogallery.org.ru). What makes this 1943 cover so special is that you start wondering about the fact that in '43 about 99,9% sure no sportscar was imported in the Netherlands. In fact most cars were claimed and/or exported for army use in Germany. Also we don't think there was any wartime production of BMW (sports)cars. As far as we know production was totally dedicated to aero engines and motorcycles. But to come back to our rallying car, what is the last pre-1945 event in which a 328 (see photo, car no.6) participated? We finally came to the preliminary conclusion that in fact the magazine was a classic car magazine in those dark years.... Temporarily the 'Autokampioen' was not about the present, but about the past. (Picture courtesy Autokampioen)
