Believed to be one of just three DHCs by Carlton, and the only one to carry cycle wings and a Dickie seat, this example is particularly good looking, striking a perfect balance between sporting elegance and practicality.
The car’s sporting appearance is outlined by its evocative cycle wings and long, clean bonnet line. While the flat folding hood with wind up windows allows the joys of open-top motoring, it also offers the protection of a fully enclosed car. Passengers are treated to a more basic ‘dickie seat’ in the rear; charismatic scuttle vents are provided together with a radiator stone guard; and the tail of the car is short, neatly rounding over to complete a perfectly balanced silhouette.
The 3 Litre was introduced in 1928, featuring a similar engine to the 16/65 model but bored out to 72mm, giving 2931cc. The smooth six-cylinder engine has seven main bearings, with twin SU carburettors and a Scintilla magneto. Those familiar with the model hold them in high regard.
This car carries the correct, earlier 3 Litre Z-type chassis (having a close resemblance to the popular 2 Litre model) but with a 10’9″ wheelbase. It also uses Lagonda’s own four speed gearbox. The model had a long production run, finishing in 1934, being succeeded by the 3½ litre which used yet another variant of the same engine. Later 3 Litres had heavier chassis and a slightly enlarged engine capacity of 3181cc. An 8-speed Maybach gearbox was also offered.
Whilst this car is not in show condition, it is in very good touring order having been subject to a complete engine rebuild during 2013-2014. This included fitting of new Arrow conrods with shell bearings, new cylinder liners and pistons. The cylinder head was fully rebuilt, together with the carburettors, magneto and radiator. The clutch has also been relined, together with a rear axle rebuild, and the fitting of new road wheels. All work has been carried out by reputable specialists.
Having been in the hands of the current owner for thirteen years, and subject to a great deal of expenditure, he feels the time has come to ‘pass the baton on’.
Conceived during the vintage period, this car carries all the hallmarks of a high-end vintage sports car, with thrilling lines and exciting performance.
