1920 Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Silver Ghost Alpine Eagle Tourer by Barker
Chassis Number: 58UE
Registration Number: XF7007
Coming to us from over 46 years of continuous ownership. The build record for chassis number 58UE, specifically notes “chassis to be built for speed”, with the equipment of a “High Speed Alpine Eagle engine”, “light springing”, and a lowered D-position steering column, while the body crafted by Barker was a lightweight two-door tourer with concealed hinges and no exterior door handles. Very few Silver Ghosts of any era were as dramatic and rakish; fewer still began life so fortuitously, and have survived the passing century so intact.
The car was originally delivered to cotton manufacturer T A Stuttard at his home, Brae Cottage—familiar to Rolls-Royce enthusiasts as the former home of Sir F Henry Royce himself—in front of which the Silver Ghost was pictured in period. It is believed to have covered only 10,000 miles by 1951. It is subsequently recorded as having been owned by Rex Broughton of Cheshire, who recorded it with the American Rolls-Royce Owners’ Club from 1969 to 1972. At that time, noted Silver Ghost technician Jonathan Harley wrote of it that “the car is completely authentic to all intents and purposes. The coachwork is original and in excellent condition. There does not appear to be any modifications carried out on any part of the coachwork or chassis…58UE stands head and shoulders above most of its vintage brethren and as an investment, must rank with the best Silver Ghosts extant”.
THe car has been extensively rallied In far flung places such as America & the alps with some 34,000 miles having been covered by the late owner. During this time it has been maintained without regard to cost by both Jonathan Harley, P & A Wood & also more recently Jonathan Wood. Currently the car is having a new radiator core fitted by Marque speciailsts Kenworthy & Company along with a full check over prior to its sale.
Very rarely do we find such low mileage & completely untouched examples. To drive the car is a real pleausre as it drives in a manner never replicated in cars that have been rdisassembled & rebuilt. The steering in particular is finger tip light & play free. Likewise the gear box has a buttery smooth feel to it in operation. Being an alpine eagle model with high compression pistons & built for speed according to the factory records, the car is needless to say no slouch on the road.
All inteior leather is original to the car in black fluted style. A wonderfully patinated leather motoring trunk once belonging to HRH The Sultaon of Johore is found to the rear of the car. A large maintenance file comes with the car which we will photograph once we have collected it. The file contains some wonderful period pictures of the car looking then just as it does today.
