1927 Bugatti Type 40 Cabriolet number 40558 .
Engine 323 (ex 40445)
Delivered new to Australia in 1927, 40558 was imported into New Zealand in 1993 where it has remained in the same ownership since then.
Like many Bugatti’s that have survived the post war years, this type 40 has led an interesting and well documented life. Originally delivered as a Tourer , the front brakes were upgraded using Type 37 components.
Following a serious accident and fire in 1947, the remains of the car survived, and in 1960 the rolling chassis was acquired by an Alvis enthusiast who made it into a single seater car for Vintage speed events. It competed in this form for many years before passing to another enthusiast who accumulated the correct Bugatti components to return the car to Type 40 Specification.
The restoration was completed in 1982 with a newly built Wilkinson replica grand sports body, manufactured in England. It has been well motored since on rallies and Vintage motoring events.
The car presents as an honest well used Vintage that has been driven and enjoyed. The paintwork and interior display the expected patina of a car that has seen regular use, while mechanically it performs well and ready for continued enjoyment
The Type 40 introduced in 1926 was Bugatti’s sporting touring model. Around 790 examples were built between 1926 to1930, making this one of Bugatti’s most successful models of that era.
Powered by the 1.5 single overhead cam 4cylinder engine, giving this lively performance for its day. The type 40 one of the most enjoyable Vintage Bugatti’s to own and drive.
