You may drive these at the Festival of Speed 2022…

It is very good news that the Festival of Speed will return to Goodwood from 8 to 10 July. “Better than ever,” say the organisers, who are in talks with the UK government to have the festival serve as a pilot event as part of their Events Research Programme (ERP). The event will undoubtedly inspire up-and-coming drivers. And auction house Bonhams will be able to help you make dreams come true and return with your own racer for the next year.

1928 Maserati Tipo 26 GP Racer

Three PreWarCars they will sell at the festival stand out for us. First is the very exciting Maserati Tipo 26 GP Racer with the 2.8-litre straight-eight with supercharger. It’s a 1929 car with chassis number 35 and appears to come with fantastic history from day one when it went to Argentinean racer Juan Augusto Malcolm. The documentation includes original Officine Alfieri Maserati letters, including the original bill of sale. We understand that after Malcolm’s death in 1970 his widow kept it for another nine years before eventually selling it to the next owner. And another 40+ years later the car still looks to be highly original. Naturally, it won’t come cheap, although the £900,000 to 1,300,000 estimate is perhaps not so bad for a car of this stature? This is the real deal!

1931 Bugatti Type 49 Open Tourer

Slightly more down to earth, price-wise at least, there are two short-chassis sports cars which deserve mentioning here as well. First of them is a Bugatti Type 49 Open Tourer of 1930-vintage, which is in the current (lady) ownership since 1979. It appears to be a car made from various parts mated together and with a very sporty Le Mans style open four-seater body in black and part-covered in fabric and ultra-short cycle wings. If there ever was a Bugatti hot rod, this is it!

1935 Aston Martin Mark II Tourer

Similarly estimated at £200,000 to 250,000 is an Aston-Martin Mark II short-chassis tourer of 1935 with its 1500 four-cylinder engine. This car spent much of its time in a museum collection in the US and was seen there in black with a light grey leather interior. It has now returned to its factory colours of maroon with chestnut and looks splendid. Mille Miglia 2022? Festival of Speed 2022? Le Mans Classic 2022..?
