In what wheels you had your driving lessons? (UPDATE: Minerva driving test!)

This L-signed Lagonda was photographed circa 1956 (when hand-signalling still was King). We do not know who was taking the driving lessons, but two years later this photo was taken missing some front end jewelry compared to the earlier photo. Due to harsh training practice? We will never know. Still we hope to hear if anybody of you enjoyed your driving lessons with vintage machinery.

(your editor must confess he passed his driving test in an olive green Fiat 127)

CGO857 began life as a standard 3-Litre but was upgraded some time before 1956 with a LG45 engine and axles. The ‘ZM’ type chassis fitted to the late 3-Litre cars also underpinned the M45 and LG45 models (albeit with some minor modifications) so it was not a difficult conversion. The car will be sold in auction by H&H next Wednesday, December 8th, The Pavilion Gardens, Buxton, Derbyshire.

my introduction to double declutching and pre war "driving test" in one was driving a Spyker C4, a 4L VdP Bentley, a Springfield RR Silver Ghost and a Buick in one day. A nice lesson in concentration being LHD and RHD, centre and right throttle, left and right hand gearbox among them. The RR was the least nice to drive.

In the early 1930's, my future father-in-law turned up for his license test at the local Police Station driving his father's rather imposing Minerva. The Police Seargent took one look at the car, asked him whether he'd driven it there by himself. When he received an affirmative reply he promptly wrote out a driving license on the spot. His exact words were, "If you got that thing here in one piece, that's good enough for me."
