The bigger the Packard the better? (upd: Ask the man who owns two!)

One of the oft-quoted myths, “Bigger is better”, so frequently used, is no longer the answer to every pre-war car enthusiast’s prayer. Taking for example one of the most respected prestige marques among the offerings from across the Atlantic Ocean, the Packard.  Bernie Jacobson is analysing the pro and cons of 6, 8, and 12 cylinder Packards in terms of handling, fuel comsumption, and more. You'll find his full report under Read More. To help your imagination while reading you can visit the long list of Packard automobiles on the market today.

UPDATE:  Lyndon James writes: "Yep, my grandfathers 426 roadster is way more fun to drive than his 633 7 passenger sedan."

Of all the collector cars that I have owned over the years, the ease of parking was never a consideration. Living in Minnesota the driving season is incredibly short. As I tell all of my friends from warmer climates, "winter in Minnesota is only 9 months long with about 8' of snow. (Someone will have to do the math to convert that last number into meters.) Of all my old cars, I have enjoyed the Packards the most. They were fast and reliable. The cost of fuel was just something I learned to accept and never worried about. Never even thought about it. I was happy to be on the road and enjoying the experience. Winter was always just around the corner. Generally I avoided the Interstate Freeways. The back roads and lightly traveled US Highways are the best for any old car.

The six cylinder Packards are great cars, and there are some people who have figured out how to get a lot more performance from them. Enough performance that the lowly Six can keep up with the Eight. My current project is a postwar 50s car, so buying a Packard Six and adding the 'go-faster' ingredients will have to wait awhile.
