What is it? Quiz #482

We do not want to make it too easy for you, as you can see in the quiz-photo of this week. What you can see is a very characteristic shape of the body, the wheels and fenders. Do you know what the car is? We will give you one tip: the car is built in a country where they speak German.

This will gives you hopefully enough information to tell us in maximum 100 words what car it is, the type and all other nice info you have about this pre-war car.

Comment/answer before Monday and also tell us your source. Next week, we will tell you what car it is and also who won the full 5 points in the 6 months competition, sponsored by Hans Compter Rare Cars.

A Grade F2 prduced either in Germany (1921 - 1927) or Austria (as Austro-Grade, 1923 - 1926). The most famous are the Grade race cars that were created for the AVUS opening in 1921 (see the attached file from my website)

My guess is Austro-Grade 1923-1926 produced in Klosterneuburg, Austria, a subsidiary of Grade Automobilfabrik of Bork bei Brück, Germany.
Grade was founded in 1920 by aviation pioneer Hans Grade.
The cars were small units with with an air-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine with 808 cc and 16 hp. The power was transmitted to one rear wheel through a friction gear and a chain. The 2 and 4-seater cars had unitary bodies (no chassis).
In contrast to Grade, the Austro-Grade had worm steering.
Austro-Grade closed in 1926 and Grade in 1927.

Dear prewarcar-team,
here my solution.

Grade F 2 1922-1925, built in Bork / Brandenburg by Grade Automobilwerke AG, developed by former aircraft designer Hans Grade. Lightweight with self-supporting body and RWD, selfconstructed 2T-two-cylinder-inline-engine (808 cc, 14-16 hp) from its own development, friction gear, belt-drive, electric starter and lighting, cable-steering, in 1924 costing 3,000 RM.
1923-1926 built as by the subsidiary "Austro-Grade" in Klosterneuburg/Austria with worm-drive-steering.
The pictured car comes from an early series: laterally hanging roof attached in longitudinal axis.
In the 20s my deceased neighbor Richard "borrowed" as a 13-year-old a Grade in the next village, stopped after a 10 miles-ride by a policeman.

Best regards from the Nahe-valley
Fritz

Grade Type F2 two-seater with front-mounted air-cooled 2-cylinder 2-stroke engine (808cc) producing 14 (later up to 16) h.p., cable-actuated friction gear with 4-speeds, chain-drive, no differential, magneto ignition. Both the car and the engine were developed and produced by the Grade Automobilwerke in Bork, founded in 1921 by German aviation pioneer Hans Grade. He had developed a cyclecar with a single-cylinder 2-stroke engine (500cc) already during WW1. The hood was folded sidewards on pre-1925 cars, only. Later, also 4-seater Grade cars and a 4-cylinder engine were available. Production ended in 1928. Source: “Ahnen unserer Autos” by Grenz/Kirchberg, Berlin 1975.

I've attached a hitherto unpublished original photo from my collection showing a Grade car with conventional hood mechanism (produced starting starting in 1925).

Good evening,

I think this cycle car could be an Austro-Grade, an austrian cycle car based on the German Grade, build beetween 1923 to 1926 by Austro-Grade AG, in Kleusterneuburg, Austria, Under license of the german Grade.
The engine was an air-cooled 2 cylinder 2 stroke 808 cc.

A tricky one! I think it's a Grade, most likely a 4/16 PS model, a German car from the early 1920s. Manufactured in Bork bei Bruck near Berlin. Grade Automobilwerke AG was founded by pioneer aviator Hans Grade in 1921. An advanced car for the time with chassis-less construction and a two stroke aircooled twin cylinder engine, features that probably came from Hans' aircraft design knowledge. The cars emblem commemorates his flying exploits and aircraft manufacturing featuring a small monoplane in a circle. around 2000 cars were built by Grade before the company closed in 1927.

Hello,

The car pictured is a GRADE KLEINWAGEN 4/16 PS, the brainchild of German aviation pioneer Hans Grade (1879-1946) and built between 1922 and 1927 in a factory at Bork/Kyritz in Brandenburg. The small two-seater was powered by a two-cylinder two-stroke engine. An interestung feature was the unibody design.

I think this is "Grade F2" (built between 1922 and 1925 from "Grade Automobilwerke AG Bork (Post Brück in der Mark")
This second version had electric front headlights; first version Grade F1 (built 1921) without electric lights).
2 cylinder-2 stroke engine, 4/14 HP, capacity 808 cm³
Hans Grade was a German Flight Pioneer (1909 he won the "Lanz Preis der Lüfte" - 50.000 Reichsmark); 1903 he built his first motorcycle, two years later he found the "Grade Motorwerke GmbH Magdeburg".
1921 he found the Hans Grade Werke GmbH Bork, AG since July 1921. Production ended 1928.

This is a Grade 4/16 PS, aka Grade F2(A), built from 1922 to 1928 in Bork, Germany. It might as well be an Austro-Grade 4/16 PS, built from 1923 to 1926 in Klosterneuburg, Austria. Hans Grade was a German aviation pioneer, doing his first flight in 1908 in a self-built triplane. His pilote licence wore the number 2. In 1915 he built a first car prototype and started car production in 1921 with the 4/12 PS two-cylinder friction-drive tandem seater, already looking much like the puzzle car. The last of about 2,000 Grade cars were four-seater with a four-cylinder engine.

The car on the photo is a Grade F2. The F2 was built between 1922 - 1924. The Grade was constructed by Hans Grade, one of the aircraft pioneers in Germany. He was the first German to fly with his self built aeroplane. He started building two stroke engines and motorbikes in Magdeburg. Before he began to manufacture light aeroplanes at Bork near Berlin. After the kaiser war he was not allowed anymore to produce aircrafts anymore. So he designed a car, which was totally different to anything else. The body consisted of a steel tub in which the engine and all the ancillaries including seats where situated. The upper half of the body was a tub, too with only openings for the doors, bonnet and boot. In fact an all steel monocoque body.
The engine was a two cylinder. two stroke engine with 808 cc, The Grade had friction drive and from the friction drive a chain to the right gearwheel. the engine developed 16 hp. The car was built before the end of 1924, because the hood lies on the left side From fall 24 the hood was in a normal position in the back. The advertising for the Grade said, whereas a normal car has 2000 parts, the Grade has 300. Around 2000 Grade where built.

This is a Austo-Grade buildt from 1923 to 26 in Klosterneuburg near Vienna. made under licence from the german Grade Werke, tecnically identical to the german version apart from steering (worm and nut). 2 cylinder 2 stroke, 808ccm and 16hp. No gearbox as the drive was via friction disk wich allowed forward and backwards the same speed. All you had to do was move the little friction roll across the big disk, depending of the distance of the center you choose the speed. Final drive was via chain to the right rear wheel, no differential. Unibody construction, no chassis. Liquidation of Austro Grade in August 1926 closely followed by Grade Automobilfabrik AG in 1927.

Austro Grade F 2 1925 or 26. Very similar to the German Grade, but for the shape of the fenders.
The Austro-Grade was built in Klosterneuburg near Vienna between 1922 and 1926. It was an Offspring of Grade Automobilfabrik in Bork, Germany. The little cars were powered by an air cooled 2 cyl. 2 stroke engine of 808 ccm and 16 HP. Transmission by friction gearbox and chain to the right wheel only, no diff.

Austro-Grade built in Klosterneuburg near Vienna. The Company was founded i March 1923, the mother-company in Germany already three year earlier by flight pioneer Hans Grade. Quite popular in Germany before the big facturers became interested in the baby car.
The monocoque construction of a small car was its most innovative feature. The engine was an air-cooled twin of 808 cm3 capacity, giving 16 horsepowers. One of the last motorcars to have friction drive, hence no clutch or differential. It differed from the German original by having worm and sector steering. My source even speaks of only the right back wheel powered...
Austro-Grade Automobilfabrik AG went into liquidation in 1926,

The Austro-Grade Automobilfabrik AG in Klosterneuburg near Vienna was founded on March 30, 1923. It was the Austrian branch of the German Grade car factory founded by the Aviator Hans Grade in 1920. The vehicles largely corresponded the models of the German branch. It was boat-shaped with a self-supporting body, an air-cooled two-cylinder two-stroke engine with 808 cc 16 HP engine. Power was transferred using a friction gear and open roller chain to the right rear wheel, worm steering and cable brakes, electric light and starter system. The Austrian company ceased in 1926 and the German branch closed in 1927.
