What is it? Quiz #448

The "car", we are looking for was built for the attempt to break Sir Malcom Campbells land speed record of the early thirties. Much is written about the car, but most information is conflictive. Trusted information is given about the engineer who built this "beast", the chassis is based on and about the end of the car. And finally one more clue: The engineer wanted to bring the car to Daytona Beach, but it never left the country of its origin, because it was destroyed during a test drive.

Anyway we want you to tell us about the car shown here, about its builder and the chassis it is based on. Give us your best shot plus any (trivial) information you may have at hand. As you know the details often determine the winner! And as usual, take care not to use more than 100 words, send in your answer before Monday. Good luck!

In 1932, Monsieur Stapp tried to bring the Land Speed Record to France. At Chatou he built a wheeled bomb painted in French racing blue. Forward vision was by means of a modified submarine periscope. His machine was based on cannibalized Voisin chassis. In front was the original engine. In the rear, he had mounted three 600-hp Jupiter radial aircraft engines. Stapp had converted them from internal combustion to turbines by removing the pistons. Using the original Voisin powerplant as a starter for the "turbines".The test short-lived, achieving no more than 80 mph., At a second test on the Saint Germaine-to-Paris highway, the beast caught fire.

I know nothing about this car. I did get laugh seeing the side mounted spare tire on a ""Land Speed Record" car. My imagination came up with all kinds of possibilities necessitating spare rubber! I can't wait to read the story or stories about it.

1932 “Jupiter” racer built by Rene Stapp, Built on a Voisin chassis and powered by three 9 cylinder Bristol Jupiter (or licence-built Gnome-Rhône?) radial aircrarft engines. converted into ‘internal combustion turbines’ from which pistons had been removed! At estimated 550 bhp each this was quite a “beast”! Main Voisin engine used as starter. Said equiped with periscope, since no foward vision in closed cockpit. Never made it to Daytona Beach. Car ‘2’ (implying another car) burned at La Baule april 26 during trial run. Stapp broke his leg escaping.

A laughing matter. Inspired by cartoonist W. Health Robinson?
Built 1930-1932 by René Stapp, Chantou, France. He is not the Stapp of ‘Sonic Wind’ fame.
Driven in Paris. On the beach in France St. Nazaire / La Baule?) it caught fire, so no Daytona Beach.

Specs:
- 3 Bristol Jupiter turbine engines, each 800HP
- theoretical speed 500-600 km/h
- Voisin chassis , 60hp engine as starting aid
- +/- 10 meters long
- Tailfin as rudder
- Spare tyre
- Box for retaining records
- Radio controlled stearing. Aerial along the top of the car. It even holds front and rear together an is used as washing line
- Normal tyres
- Driving position like a railway engine driver

René Stapp’s record attempt car was called either Mademoiselle France or Jupiter. Like most things about the car, sources differ and there was much secrecy about the details.
It was built on a Voisin chassis and apparently retained its original engine, but with the addition of 2 (maybe 3) Bristol Jupiter radial aero engines, converted into “internal combustion turbines” after the pistons had been removed. 4 wheel drive and electric transmission were reputed to be among its innovations
Some claim it did actually run at Daytona (speed unknown) but most agree it never left France and was destroyed by fire on the beach at La Baule near St. Nazaire in Brittany

It has of course graced these pages before

This 4 tons, 7.5m long car is Voisin C5 #2729 modified by engineer René Stapp to break Sir Campbell's record. The "periscoped" car n°2 retained its Voisin engine for the road but had 3 Jupiter engines given for 1200 HP to 3000 HP according to different period newspapers.
26/04/1932, Mr Stapp and mechanic Mr Cherrière went for a run on La Baule beach. The car took fire, both men escaped. Mr Stapp broke his tibia and his kneecap. Because of the fire and the rising tide, the car had to be retrieved later during the night. It was NOT destroyed.

This is the 1932 “Stapp Jupiter” car designed and attempted to be driven by French racing Driver and engineer René Stapp. The chassis is a Voisin Chassis. Stapp mounted two Bristol 800hp Jupiter radial aero engines that were converted to internal combustion turbines. Theoretically he could have reached the power of Campbells Blue Bird. Accommodation for driver and mechanic was bizarre: they had to stand amidships like a railway engine driver, the driver having to peer out of a hatch cut in the bodywork with no protective windshield.
This beast was demonstrated on the streets of Paris and then taken to the sands of Brittany for testing, where the Stapp Jupiter unfortunately burst into Flames.

Designed and built by Rene Stapp in 1930-1932, this car used a Voisin chassis. It had two, though some say three, Bristol Jupiter radial aero engines. This gave rise to it being called the Jupiter. Some even claim that it also retained the Voisin engine. It is someimes shown with a rudder like appendage at its rear. Apparently it was driven from a standing position.
Following demonstration runs in Paris it caught fire and was destroyed at La Baule. Despite this there is at least one photograph circulating that claims to show it at Daytona.

Jupiter from Rene Stapp, buildt in Paris 1939 to 1932. Chassis is a Voisin, two engines Bristol Jupiter radial. Destroyed in fire at La Baule beach at a test run before it could be transported to the US for the Dytona beach trial.
Engines are Bristol or Bristol licensed Gnome Rhone 9 cyl. radial engines. Each engine has a displacement of 28,7 litres and between 350 and 500 hp 4Valve non detachable heads and some supercharged. Jupiter engines came in many variants and were built in many countries. One could suspect a Gnome Rhone engine but....

This car was built in Paris between 1930 and 1932 by Rene Stapp. It was powered by two 29 litre Bristol Jupiter radial engines fitted into a Voisin chassis. The original Voisin engine was also retained to be used as a starter.( each radial engine estimated at 600bhp)
The large rear tail fin was configured as a rudder connected by cables to the steering.
The car size was massive at 10 metres long and weighed in excess of 5000lb. To see forward a modified submarine periscope was used.
Unfortunately the engineering used to build this car did not match it’s expected performance. It caught fire at 90 kph and was completely destroyed during a trial run on the beach at La Baule in April 1932.
