Weird Wednesday: A getaway Lincoln (UPDATE: Book about Jack Diamond)

The Lincoln Model L was one of the most elegant automobiles of the 1920s. Movie stars and bankers were not the only people buying this luxurious car, the gangsters of that time also appreciated the Lincoln’s powerful engine and excellent road holding. Because of its tremendous acceleration it soon became the favourite getaway car for men like Al Capone, Dutch Schultz and Lucky Luciano. This 1929 Lincoln Model L Town Car with bodywork by Brunn, was owned by Jack -Legs- Diamond, during the Prohibition era a well-known Irish-American gangster in New York. He got his nickname "Legs" either from being a good dancer or from how fast he could escape from his enemies. On one occasion he was shot five times, but managed to escape, getting bullets into the back of the Lincoln, as well as various locations on his body. The Lincoln has been kept in completely original condition ever since and the bullet holes are still there. The Lincoln now resides in Holland and is owned by ‘Hans Bezemer’, a company specializing in original, low-mileage automobiles. It is worth to check out their new website!

Update by Larry A. Lewis: "A superb book about Legs Diamond is called, approprately "Legs," written by William Kennedy, who also wrote "Ironweed" and "Billy Phelan's Last Game." These were his "Albany, N.Y." trilogy and are inter-related stories about gangsters, politicians, drunkards and so forth in 1938 Albany."
