Grimsthorpe Vintage Speed Trials
26th August 2018
The year is 1903 and beneath the stately gaze of Grimsthorpe Castle, the peace of the red deer park is about to be shattered. The Lincolnshire Automobile Club gathered for the first time, on that summer’s afternoon, to test their vehicles. These ‘Reliabilty Trials’ as they were known, gave the owners of these Edwardian cars and motorbikes a chance to compete against the clock with their fellow club members.
Fast forward over 110 years and this year, for the first time since 1911, Vintage Speed Trials is delighted to announce that they are reinstating this fantastic event in the beautiful deer park at Grimsthorpe, close to Bourne, the home of the ERA; the English challenger to the mighty Bugatti. In 1904, T W Mays, the founder of ERA and father of international racing driver Raymond Mays, raced at this very venue.
‘Reviving pre-war Speed Trials’
The director of Vintage Speed Trials, Richard Powell says, “I count myself very fortunate to be at the heart of a loyal band of enthusiasts who lovingly restore and maintain our motorsport heritage. It means that these vehicles will be preserved for future generations”
The event this year promises to be full of the sights, sounds and smells of the vintage era of motorsport and if you are lucky, you might even be able to get your own hands dirty as you look beneath the bonnet of a 1920s Bugatti or Aston Martin. Ticket holders can step back in time amidst a stunning Capability Brown landscape and experience a glorious day of authentic Edwardian vehicles and racing cars from before WW2, amidst the elegant backdrop of Grimsthorpe Castle.
From the excitement of the drivers paddock, to the picnicking amongst post-war cars in the exclusive Classic Car Park, it will be a feast for all the senses as visitors are transported back in time to the pre-war period of British Motor Racing.
The cars and motorcycles (every single one of a pre-1939 vintage) will be tested three times up and down the sinuous 1/2 mile track from the start line by the lake gently climbing to the finish line besides the castle.
