On the market: an oily-rag Le Zèbre voiturette

Le Zèbre was one of countless marques which, although reasonably prosperous for a few years, failed to last beyond the Vintage years. Founded in Suresnes in 1909, the early Le Zèbres were popular despite their unusual philosophy. Light-car makers generally wanted to achieve the smoothness and efficiency of larger cars, so were beginning to move towards four-cylinder engines rather than twins. Le Zèbre did quite the opposite and presented a rudimentary single-cylinder model of 5hp, with two speeds and shaft-drive. A four-cylinder would not be made until 1912.

The 1911 Le Zèbre Type A for sale here is not just a very rare survivor of the early Le Zèbre 5hp singles, it is probably unique in terms of its originality and superb state of preservation. The patinated paintwork exudes charm and character, while the upholstery is in exceptionally good order.

The vendor speculates that it was probably kept in use until the mid-1930s, but was placed in storage until the mid-1960s when it fell into the hands of some sympathetic enthusiasts. It has changed hands a few times since then, but it has always been kept running and had its historic finish respected.

While we don't know exactly when it was last run on the road, so it may require a spot of recommissioning or just a basic service, any such light work is but a small price to pay for the use of this little treasure. It will be perfect for Veteran and Edwardian tours and, in such charming cosmetic condition, it's sure to be one of those cars which raises a smile from every passer-by.
