Th.Schneider from Adelaide via Melbourne to Paris

Over the years there have been many coachbuilders. Most we know, but we had never heard of Domain Motor Body Builders of 348 Saint Kilda Road in Melbourne, Australia. Yet this company produced the coachwork of at least two of the only three six-cylinder Th. Schneider cars that were imported in Australia. And one of those two became famous as on 4 July 1925 a Mr. A.H. Barnes from Sydney lowered the Adelaide to Melbourne record. He drove the 573 miles in twelve hours and ten minutes, which was quite an achievement as the road linking the two cities was mostly unpaved at the time. This same Th. Schneider survived in remarkably original condition, the Domain signature still on its sill plates. Having been in the hands of two careful owners since the 1960s, the 1921 Th. Schneider 4½-Litre Tourer will be offered on February 5 by RM Auctions during their inaugural auction in Paris. It's lot 19, and in our opinion well worth a look as it will give its rivals, the Vauxhall 30-98 or the 4½-Litre Bentley, a run for the money!

I have attached this aged photo of the record breaking Th.Scheider vehicle. I believe it was taken near the Cockburn Hotel, on the SA-NSW border. I was trying to date the photo, when I found this page. My maternal grandmother spent her early years in Cockburn. Her father, Mick O'Connor worked for the railways.

I did purchase the 4l5 Théo number 28, she arrived at home today near Paris in France.
I would be very happy to share any information on the car or on Domain Motors witch is really unknown in France.
Thank you

The 6cyl Schneider going up for sale with engine number 28 is not the car that broke the inter city records .The car that John Bisley has with engine number 29 is the record breaking car which was never fitted with a Domain Motors touring body. signed Bob Dixon Schneider owner for 54 years and knew Don Quinton 40 years ago, when he first did the engine up and used the car, which is now for sale In Paris

At the Domain Motors dispersal auction there were two six-cylinder Schneiders mentioned: the record car and a (brand new latest model) "D.S., 6-cyl, 25-h.p., 6 wire wheels, special de luxe job." The description of this car matches that of the car to be auctioned next week http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?lot_id=1064278 so perhaps the record car is indeed in Sid's shed in Australia?

I understand that the records car was never bodied. The second Domain bodied car is stored in my premises as are the remains of what is believed to be the bare chassis of the Record car. The cars belong to a friend of mine and restoration is is barely started. I attach a reference to the Record cars history after it was sold by Domain.

The record breaking car was aquired by Watts McNamara and went from Myrtleford to Griffith in 1927. It remained in that area
most of its life. The car has survived.

In July 1926, a year after the Melbourne-Adelaide record was broken, Domain Motors was "retiring from business". At the resultant auction, various cars were offered including 4 Ansaldos, 3 Ansaldo chassis, 4 "brand new latest model" Schneiders and the record-breaking car itself which was offered as a "chassis". The record breaker was described as "six-cylinder, 25-h.p. This car broke all interstate records".
If sold as a chassis in mid 1927 when Domain Motors were out of business, the origin of the touring body now fitted to the car presents a mystery.

Dear Editor,

I have been maintaining a register of known surviving Th. Schneider for sometime now. At this link http://thschneider.org/register/ I can confirm three type 21.20.1 cars of which chassis #28 is one. All identified on my register. I understand the other two remain in Australia and are #29 & #30. Likely brought out in a batch in chassis form and bodied by Domain Motors in Melbourne. Chassis #29 also has a surviving Domain Motors body similar to #28 though unrestored when last I heard. It is unclear how many type 21.20.1 came to Australia. Domain Motors were also an agent for Th. Schneider hence it isn't surprising a number were also bodied by them. Kellow-Falkiner of 206 Russell Street in Melbourne were another well known body builder and also an agent for Th. Schneider for a time.
Regards
Marc

348 St Kilda Rd is now a luxury block of residences.
But there is an old brick building in front of it which may have been the site of the motor body shop
