"This new-fangled horseless carriage was carefully driven home"

We received this lovely picture from Martin Flanagan. We see his great-grandfather Richard Hall riding in the back seat of his new Winton. That is what Martin told us. But is this pre-war a Winton?

The whole family on a Sunday drive, with his son behind the steering wheel. The picture was taken near Victoria, B.C. Canada. The signs in the background say Rocky Point, East Sooke, Happy Valley and Metchosin Store. “The Winton was purchased new in Seattle Washington. And after being shown how to operate and drive this new-fangled horseless carriage was carefully driven home to Victoria. I sure wish they had kept it,” Martin told us.

What a lovely story! Thank you very much for sharing!

Do you also have an old photograph with a story or anecdote? Please send it to [email protected] or "put" it in the PreWar Postbox.

Have a good weekend everyone!

Good research there Peter. Something that can help to date the car is that it still does not have electric lights.

I agree that Russell would be a better idea :-)

Another wonderful picture and a great piece of family history. However, I'm not sure this is the Winton. The Wintons I find pictures of have very modern looking full curved rear fenders, not the flat topped ones like this car has. The windshield and dash do not look like Winton, either. However, the story is accurate in saying that the Winton would have been purchased in Seattle and driven back. That was the closest Winton agency.

I think the car is a 1911 Russell-Knight. The fenders, windshield, lamps, and body design fit for this make. And, checking the BC registration archives, I find that Mr. Richard Hall of 906 Linden Ave., Victoria, (later of Pembroke St.) had BC registration number 149. Initially he had a Franklin, but sometime around 1912 - 1914 he registered a Russell with this same number.

I am gathering up pictures of Russell cars and trucks and would be very pleased if Martin could contact me about this picture.

I'm sorry to say that the car is a 1911 Cadillac. So I hope you will like that car as much as a Winton!

Please include
This looks to be about a 1914 car, so the Winton could have been owned previous to this one.

I am sure this is not a Winton. Maybe a Stoddard Dayton?
