The St.Petersburg barnfind ! (UPDATE II: 'pre-Mulhouse' type D )

Despite what people say about the Chinese market, what we see in general is a lively development of the market behind the former 'Iron Curtain'. many cars are sold to the countries there, restoration companies flourish and even barnfinds do occur occasionally ! Today's charming little steamer ermerged from the St. Petersburg area and is a most vivid example of the development. You are looking at a Gardner Serpollet Type D, # 140. The steamer vis-a-vis (almost fully identical to the 1901 example in the Schlumpf Collection) is not yet dated, but if read the old Georgano we tend to think this could be a 1903 car with central located flat twin. Stanley historian Kit Foster adds to that:"... of that period but perhaps earlier as Georgano writes that the upright front with vertical water tank came in 1903. It's no later than 1903 because in '04 the engine was moved forward." Can you add to the knowledge about this motorcar? Contact Us (JB)
UPDATE II by Laurent Friry:"...the Schlumpf's Serpollet is indeed a type D and it bears the chassis number #199."
Update I came in from Kit Foster and Jan Bruijn. Kit writes:"... a friend it as 1900, based on knowledge of five other cars and their chassis numbers." Jan Bruijn:"...the other D type known is number 226 and dated 1901, So this one is earlier, my guess 1900, engine is a 4 cylinder 6 hp steam engine. Gardner joined Serpollet in 1900. The car carries the plate of the new venture but could of course have been produced earlier."
