The Singer and his Song Mystery (Upd. June and Farrar Burn + Dodge)

A great photo sent to us by Anton van Luijk. We do love mobile homes, but this photo beats them all. The more you look at it, the more details you see. At first it seems like a happy family proudly posing in front of their rebuilt home. But then look at what's written on top of the roof: "sings and sells his own songs" So the family could be be performers at the Chautauqua Circuit. That would also explain the platform/stage on the bonnet. And look at that potted plant on the fender. Must have been a great show! But who are they? Can anybody tell us?

Marvelous story. Now I'll have to find the book. Looking carefully at the pic at the end of the story, taken in the same Washington, DC, location from a different angle, I see that the Dodge's sedan body has been disguised with muntin bars in the windows and a gable roof. Very clever!

Thanks for the link, Jean-Yves, quot: 'The secret of living on so small an income is to not want anything.' and...'he was happiest when he was broke and out of work. It gave him complete financial security. They put much trust in life and didn't waste a minute of it."
So true these words; even today people should take life day by day and not put all trust in dollar bills ONLY! but that's my humble oppion.

1929? 1930? They probably invented their own job in difficult times so dancing and singing in the street, on top of their car, and later sleeping in it as well. Fighting through The Depression in a different style. Could now even be a good idea so climb your HUMMER and sing your lungs out ;-)

Doesn't the young man on the left look a lot like Meg Ryan ? ?
Her father (Harry Hyra) was a teacher though !

I don't know about the people, but the vehicle looks like a Dodge.

House cars came in many shapes and sizes. Here's one with another purpose:
