The Seaside Photographer
By Michael Ware: In the twenties and thirties it was quite a novelty to go to the seaside. When you did you often dressed up in your best clothes. On the beach you would find the seaside photographer eager to record your visit for you. Some used different props to make the pictures more interesting. Ownership of a car, whatever the age, was something of a novelty, so being photographed in a car was unusual. Many of the photographers used crude cut outs of cars to achieve the effect, whilst it would appear from these photographs others used real cars or at least mock ups made from real cars, most of which today would be collectors pieces. What makes do you recognise?

The car in the second picture, 2 in the cockpit and 2 on the back looks like a Cardenas cyclecar, similar to the one that can be seen coppering regularly in VSCC hillclimbs

Hi everyone. Let me add a sequel to the Michael Ware review. I first knew the Montagu Motor Museum in the 1950,s when the collection had grown and was now housed in wooden buildings behind the house. Michael Sedgewick was the endearing, wildly gesticulatory curator/librarian. Michael Ware the photographer.
Later, Sedgewick having passed away MW became curator.
In the late 1960,s I was a photographer and one of my tasks was to attend to the needs of the many visitors to the then nascent motor museum. Each morning I would wheel out the 1901 Durkopp complete with a box of period hats. The results were recorded using a Leica 3b with negative B+W stock. However I always carried a Rollei for 6x6 images of special occasions.[url]http://www.rick-ford.co.uk/PWC/DurkoppMod03.jpg[/url]
On this occasion the characters were handsome and, lo and behold, there appeared a figure astride a Pederson bicycle. Equipping him a straw boater I marshalled him into the picture.
This was none other than Doug Durnford
A very important figure in the NMM history, without him there would have been no motor cycles in the Beaulieu collection today.
