The Savile Row of Motordom

That was how British carmaker A.C.'s own period publicity referred to themselves. Thus implying other cars being 'off-the-peg'. Like many companies at the end of the 1920s A.C. ran into financial difficulties and was bought by the Hurlock Brothers in 1930. They went on producing 6-cylinder sporting tourers and saloons. In 1935 a two-seater short chassis competition model was introduced that had everything you could wish for: a potent two-litre 80hp engine with three SU carburettors. It became known as the 16/80 model. Between the end of 1935 and 1937 only 28 such Competition two-seaters were built. Now one of these comes up for sale at Coys December 5 True Greats Auction. This gorgeous red two-seater, CXU 568, is well-known for its great pre-war competition career which included famous events like the Donington 12 hours, several events at Brooklands and the Lands End Trial. In the late 1960s the car went to the USA where for the next forty-plus years it has had only two owners. Hmm, it’s nearly Christmas… why not ask Santa to have a preview at lot Lot 335.
