The Nippon pilot cap Mystery. (Update: Rabbit Fur!)

By Joop Terpstra: I own this leather cap for 35 years and still it is a mystery to me. I was wondering if any of our (Chinese or Japanese) readers could identify the leather cap that is very old and was given to me as a birthday present. As a young sailor traveled the seven seas and on one of these trips he found this flying cap in China or Japan and the story goes that it was original from a kamikaze pilot in a Zero, but if this is actually true I never knew... Does some of your readers can put some light on this matter?

we found this misplaced Update:  Yes it is a( Kamikaze) Pilots winter helmet. There was no difference between the Kamikaze and the Pilots helmets .The straps on the ear pieces, are for the goggles so that they don't slip upwards. Are you sure that the lining is sheepskin ? Normally it is made of Rabbit fur.
I have a compleet winter flight uniform lined with Rabbit fur including the leather helmet also lined in Rabbit fur. Furthermore I have a complete summer flight uniform which isn't lined! If you write an e mail where to send it to I can do so! Regards Jorgen

Thanks Jorgen, that is what you can call real news! Rabit fur can be correct indeed. I was making a guess that it came from a japanese sheep.
I would love to hear more about this subject. I am very grateful that you took the effort to respond, best regards, Joop Terpstra

Hi Jaap, the cap is not too big but fits a medium head. I have great respect for your words regarding the war-experience of many people and the tragedy it brought to many. Let there be peace to all corners of this planet in 2011..!

Dear Joop,
I grew up in a situation with many people who had been in Japanese concentration camps. Some of them brought helmets and caps from japanese soldiers, the remarkable thing was that they did not fit any of us children.
And I am speaking about children about 6 years old. Those helmets were uncredible small.
So, is your cap also very small ? And, perhaps I gave you a an explanation how such a cap reached our shores.

Hi Jaap, thanks for your remark. The copper buttons both have a fine curly decoration on the outside ring. They were original dark brown painted but most of the paint is gone, only in the middle (which lays a lttle deeper) there is some paint left. No japanese words or factory-name on them, unfortunately.
Oh one more detail: the ear-pieces are made of painted cheap pressed carton ..! So it really 'feels' like a war product. Come on japanese/chinese enthousiasts, for war stuff, help us a little here with the words inside. thank you so much.

Thanks Stuart for your input.
The colleque that gave me this leather cap, was rather mysterious about it and how he found it he kept completly to himself. It came to me on my birthday because in that time I drove a well used 1933 MG J2 and when he saw that car he was very enthousiastic. But I wasn't wearing it in all those years, mainly because the sheep-skin on the inside of the cap was smelling like a damp basement, so not too attractive. It has some nice details and a tiny strap on the back of the head to make it better fitting and the leather is of a fine quality. But ofcourse most interesting is what is written in that ear-piece!

Obviously a fleece lined cap, for those cold moments in the cockpit, or on his return perhaps.
