'Ne touche pas !!!' (Don't touch!)

Barnfinds do turn up from time to time, but seldom are they as well preserved as this one. It’s a circa 1900 De Dion Bouton type G that in all those years has probably never left the street where it was found. It was given by its first owner, a Mr J. B. Damour residing at 1 Rue de Suresnes, Garches, near Paris to the great grandfather of the seller, who in 1910-1912 lived and worked in the same street. The great grandfather forbid anyone to touch it and - absolutely incredible - this ban went from each generation to the next one. This explains why the Dion Bouton is still “dans son jus”. The woodwork is in perfect condition, but the cylinder block is cracked due to frost. The front trunk contains the tools and a box with sliding lid. The parts needed to function successfully are also there: pair of Ouvrard lanterns, a candle box, a complete set of mint condition intake- and exhaust valves, blades for the trembler ignition, a bicycle pump and Michelin tire patches, graphite, talc, a funnel, a fuel can... Dear Sir.
I see no reason why this car should not be put back on the road, but,I would like to see all it's visible ageing preserved, particularly its paint. With the advice of a preservation specialist this car would retain its importance and value as a true antique car,and one of very few to have survived in this condition from the turn of the century.
For anyone interested in original, unrestored cars, you could do no better than to see the Dutch National Motor Museum.
They have some beautifully preserved and dislayed Victorian cars.

I just hope no-one does anything to this wonderful little car. I don't normally like museums but maybe this one should be left exactly as it is as a benchmark vehicle to show future generations exactly what they were like when they were built. There's enough vis a vis on the road for people to see how they function.
