This year’s report of the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run comes from Ian Hagger who followed the route as a spectator. First to the Saturday concours at Regent Street, where this twin cylinder 10hp 1902 MMC caught his eye. Sunday found him at Pease Pottage where he spotted Tim Scott on his 60hp Mercedes. Both looked in fine fettle after their tortuous ride from Peking to Paris. Then on to Brighton to watch the cars finish at Madeira Drive. Here always something unusual can be spotted, such as this novel spare tyre bolted to the flat tyre on a 1903 single cylinder 6hp De Dion Bouton. One of the highlights was the amazing 3-cylinder 20hp Arrol-Johnston pictured above. Two of its cylinders have a bore of 107.67mm, while its central cylinder measures 120.30mm. No doubt to stop vibration. It also has underfloor heating. Ideal for most Brighton runs, but not this year, as there was glorious sunshine all around. See PreWarCar.TV for some video’s or visit the LBVCR website for the complete list of participants and winners. (report and photos by Ian Hagger) (RB)
Update: John Hearne tells us that the "novel spare tyre" is known as a Stepney Wheel and was a period accessory on many veterans.
