The 1911 Cambridge Supercar Mystery (update: 45HP Mercedes Gordon Watney? )

Derrick Wells sent us this picture and writes: "This is the car that belonged to a friend's grandfather whilst he was up at Cambridge in 1911.  It was thought that it may be a Lancia, but I would be most grateful for a definite identification."

Editor: dear Derrick, to be honest, we would eat our Panama hat if this would be a Lancia. Looks more like one of the Benz 90 /100/200 HP chaindriven monsters  that were around in that era. Too bad that little or nothing similar has been preserved. Imagine that you drive up the lawns of Amelia Island next week with this deep roaring four pot supercar... Elegant is not the right word to describe The Thing. Not the kind of machinery to expect in these respected surroundings... The massive overall appearance. The supersized disced wheels. The outrageous exhaust system. The low cut tourer body. The imposing chaindrive arrangement. Everything is heavy and monstruous. Eager to learn if we were right about Benz.

editorial update: Interesting to find this period advert by Gordon Watney, suggesting this is a 45 HP Mercedes four seater  conversion by Gordon Watney

This is identified as a 135hp De DIETRICH with a Petersburg-Moscow Sports body by Gordon WATNEY in The Old Motor site.

If you look closely you can see the Mercedes is different in every detail and is obviously not the same car. However it is very similar in style, suggesting the Lorraine was a Gordon Watney conversion.

Yes You are correct, it ISN't a Mercedes, Gordon Watney happened to be a Garage with the Telegraphic Address "Mercedes, Weybridge".

Gordon Watney and Co., Ltd. South Lodge Motor Factory, Weybridge. Tel. 363 . Weybridge. T.A.: Mercedes, Weybridge.

He probably serviced Mercedes, so if he built a new body for the car it would be no surprise that it would have similarities to a mercedes of the time.

It isn't a Mercedes, although it looks like a car that Gordon Watney has pimped up.

It is creative, surely, to rebuild or maintain an old car that has somehow managed to survive for many years in its original condition. It is destructive to take such a vehicle (of any kind)&, in its old age, cut, chop & alter into one persons idea, today, of what they think they would like better. Conversions such as the wonderful car shown here were done when the parts to create such vehicles were plentiful & cheap to buy. There are a few survivors & they are very important examples of how cheap performance was got when unused aircraft engines & out of date Limousines & Tourers were freely available-& mostly in scrapyards. If Erwin O. was to build a car out of parts easily available now, & it survived for many years to come, then-if it was well done- it would be valued as an example of what can be done with modern "junk" in our time.

This is a KIT-car. Or a Pre-War HotRod.
Shows that it is just a matter of age before people start to appreciate creativity. (I hate the "originality"-boom of nowadays)

This is the St.-Petersburg- Moscow (Lorraine-)Dietrich rebuilt by the English coachbuilder Gordon Watney. The same car appeared in an earlier post see http://www.prewarcar.com/magazine/previous-features/europes-fastest-car-br-asking-gbp-800-001022.html

Many similarities (wheels, overall appearance of the body)with the Gordon Watney Mercedes, rebodied and tuned-up at Watney's Weybridge works. It had a 6.8 litre engine. The Watney car ran in 1914 at BARC races, entered by Mrs Thelka Duncan and driven by S.E.Kilham.
Picture of this GW-Mercedes can be found in the book:
Brooklands Giants brave man and their great cars, by Bill Boddy, page 72

Judging by the radiator it is a Lorraine-Dietrich.
