Strong as a Locomotive

Obviously the best known Locomobile is “Old 16”, the first American car to win the Vanderbilt Cup in 1908. But even without this succes Locomobiles became known as a quality automobile. The one shown here is a 1910 Model 30L that started life as a limousine but was rebuilt at an early stage in its life into a Speedster, not unlike “Old 16”. It also reminds us of a Mercer Raceabout from that same period, admittedly more attractive, although then it cost less than half the price of the Locomobile. Quite the reverse today! This Locomobile has been an active participant in many antique and classic car events for over 60 years, including the 50th anniversary of the Vanderbilt Cup Race in Long Island, where it was awarded a beautiful engraved and cloisonné plaque for second prize - still on the car's dashboard. This Locomobile Speedster will be offered by Bonhams at their Quail Lodge auction on August 12-13
