Some novelties persist – some don’t

By Bart Oosterling: The Vutotal concept is still a great design feature. And in a sense a safety feature too, having unobstructed vision. Too bad the concept was never succesfully adoped by the motoring industry, so only a few beautiful Vutotal Voisins, Delages, Delahayes and one (?) Bugatti remain today. The FN sport "conduit interieur" pictured must be derived from the same principle. But different from regular, this car had almost unobstructed 360° vision. But this was not the only novelty on this car. This car was equipped with servo powered brakes systeme SA Frein Dewandre. The driver is Belgian engineer Paul Kelecom, who was involved in the development of FN motorcycles and engines and promoting the new braking system. Servo powered brakes are standard these days, as are thick 5 star NCAP window pillars. Lucky for us the function of mr. Labourdette's Vutotal was beauty- not safety.

Let us not forget Labourdette's last Vutotal creation, the Rolls-Royce Phantom III of 1947!
