Slide valve saves oiling troubles

Nowadays we worry about the problems we have with the environment and climate change. Back in the days, they were concerned about the oiling troubles their valves gave. We found an interesting article in the magazine Popular Science Monthly from May 1922. It is a short but wonderful article which you may like to read.

"Lubrication and seating troubles with the valves of an automobile motor will soon be woes of the past, according to E. R. Burtnett and H. A. Brunell, engineers of Los Angeles, California, who have recently patented a slide or piston valve, the operation of which is much like that of valves on a steam engine. The valve slide, but never leave their seats as does a poppet valve. They are oiled by splash from the crankcase and will give any port area desired.

The valve consists of two small pistons moved one within the other, and both working in an auxiliary cylinder with its axis parallel to the main cylinder. The usual expansion rings keep the piston-valve tight, and the links connected with the eccentric shaft ensure positive opening of the fuel and exhaust ports irrespective of the revolution speed. The quickness of opening, and the greater area of inlet and exhaust, it is claimed, eliminate the overheating of exhaust valves and, by reducing the cylinder temperature, secure better compression and fuel economy."
