Since 1928; the London to Exeter Trial.

The London to Exeter Trial held on the first weekend of January is 80 years old now. Run by the Motor Cycling Club (MCC) which also caters for cars. This event covers a wide area of southern Dorset and Devon (UK). The hills are all natural cart tracks most with very slippery and stony surfaces. This year the event attracted 330 competitors. Though the majority of competitors compete in older classic cars, there is more than a sprinkling of prewar cars, such as MG's, Morgan, (3 and 4 wheels), Trojan, Austin 7, BSA 3 wheeler and Wolseley Hornet. Competitors compete against the Club gaining a first class award if they clean all sections, a second if they fail on one and a third if they fail on two. If they get a first class award in the Clubs three main trials in the year they win a "Triple" a most coveted award. Star of this event must have been Dudley Sterry with passenger David Price in their well known MG J2. They won a first class award and "Triple" as well. Two other trials celebs were Ian Willamson in one of the famous "Cream Cracker" pre war works MG PB's and Barry Clarke in his well known Austin 7 "Grotty Chummy" ; click for both competitors. (text and photos Michael Ware; All photographs were taken on Fingle Hill (YouTube) that has been included in the trial since well before the last war.)
