Romance in the air: Motorcycle Dating
First dates are all about first impressions. And of course, you want to show her/him your biggest pride. So with what wheels (two, three, four or more?) did you take your date for a first drive out? Was it your classic pride?
Lance Milne sent us the above picture with a question.
"A few years ago your skilled readers were able to help me pinpoint the likely year of some pics of my historic Chateau Mildura winery using Motorcycle Dating . I have now received another later photo of the winery which also needs their expertise to "Motorcycle date" with year and make of the pictured bikes and any comment as to the possible age of the bikes."
Nice motorcycles to pick up your girl and go to a winery isn't it??

Regarding the licence plate (VIC 20-157), this plate was issue in Victoria, Australia between 1910 and 1937. After 1939, the plate number begins with 2 letters and not a number.

Certainly agree with the Triumph's ID. I own a 1938 5H and thought straight away that the Triumph was most likely a 5H. Great old photo.

To add a bit more on early motorcycling, the "Messenger" tandem seat seems to be the choice for pre- 1933 Harleys and most others(US), available within H-D "accessory catalog", with pillion for luggage carrier. But the superior "H-D tandem" of 1932(?) was positioned directly over the rear wheel, added to catalog.
You do see a "few" tandems on '15 and later bikes(mostly those with sidecars), lots of racks(without cushions), do not recall a tandem on anything pre '15, the shorter boardtrack type frames, catalog anyone?

Regards Stuart's and Warren's comments - in most cases a pillion seat and foot rests were after market extras and the seat was just a padded block about 250x150 mm and about 125mm high bolted to the rear mudguard.
And, Yes, girls did ride pillion in such dresses in the late 40's. (mother probably didn't know).

As a motorcycle enthousiast, I can/will agree on the brands of these motorcycles although the very fine details can not be seen, because they are obstructed by the persons in this photo, but the one in the front to my opinion is not an AJS 36/36 because the one in the picture is not a double port engine, but a single one and there is no magneto mounted in front of the engine as shown in the advert. My guess is that it is a AJS 1938-12 250cc model

Motorcycles just were NOT DESIGNED for dates, or for passengers, in fact it may have been a sure way to dis-impress any girl if you showed up to take her away.
They did not have "transmissions" until 1915, with poor braking were capable of exceeding 60mph. So, H-D brought out their SIDECAR in 1914, sold "many more" of them than regular output.

Yes, it was. 1939 Buick Model 81 Roadmaster touring sedan, side mounts, for a drive out on Long Island. The Buick was my daily driver for a couple of years. It's gone now, but my date is still around as my wife of 49 years.

So we have two mates, two sporting 250s and two lovely young women - what a life in the the 1930s! As a bonus, the Triumph dates to April-September 1936, which dates your photo to some time later than mid-1936.
