PreWarCar Australian Correspondent Allistair ‘Bud’ Smith writes:
Swap meetings in current times seem to be nearly irrelevant to those in Vintage cars but every now and then you can be lucky. This year, like most others, I attended the Toowoomba Swap Meet in Queensland, Australia. The Toowoomba Swap is arguably the largest swap meeting in Queensland, perhaps even Australia.
I was attending mostly for social reasons, with the off chance of finding something of interest. I certainly did not expect to find this 1928 Fiat 503. This car has been in storage for several decades. The body is missing as it was used as a Utility on a station in western Queensland a long time ago. Mechanically the car is in good condition, and even comes with spares. One of the spares is a steering wheel and steering column which the previous owner found when on a Rally in New South Wales, he bought the parts and drove home to Queensland with them roped to the rear bumper bar of his 1926 Oakland! My plans at this stage are not to restore the car, but to utilise parts to aid the restoration of my Fiat Silvani 501 S.S.
Editor: well Bud, we think that's the essence of a good swap meet, finding that what you didn't come for.
