Resurrection of a Mack/Stephens (Upd. about the lubrication)

A long time ago we wrote about the discovery of five Steco Cyclecars in an attic. Among the many spare parts was also this engine, a 1909-12 Mack/Stephens Motorcycle Engine. Denny Eggert, the ´caretaker´ of the Steco cars and parts, decided to make this interesting engine operational and to run it again. Here follows his story: “Just after the turn of the century, James S. Stephen and his son Ralph were involved with aeronautical and automotive inventions that lead to the design and construction of the 1911 Steco Aerohydroplane and the development of the 1909-12 Steco Cycle-cars. The aircraft is a one-of-a-kind that was stored with the cars and a 1909 Gnome Omega rotary engine around 1914 at the outbreak of WWI. This ceased further development of his ingenious and magnificent engineering on the two historic mechanical pieces. The aircraft, cars and engine were...

The description of the lubrication system is rather confused. Presumably, it is a total loss system with oil pumped up from the oil tank at the front by a manual oil pump on the dash. From there it would be forced by a spring and piston through an adjustable drip feed to an oil pump on the engine which distributes it. If that is the case, a castor based oil like Castrol R would be more suitable.

Fascinating! But I am not quite sure what "there was no actual crankcase" means. It sounds like a total loss oiling system which would have been the norm for motorcycle engines then. Does "there is a feeder line from the bottom of the engine going up to the oil pump" mean that oil was pumped from a reservoir in the crankcase up to the hand oil pump and then back to the engine? Is that rectangular shape behind the crankcase an oil tank? Presumably there should be an adjustable drip feed between pump and engine. A castor based oil seems more likely than a modern mineral oil. Why not use Castrol R or similar? I look forward to hearing more.
