Quadricycle with Protos engine

Letter to the editor

Hello,

I am helping a friend here in Sweden who has a quadricycle equipped with an early air cooled Protos engine from circa 1900 (engine number 108). This is a very interesting project, and it would be lovely to see this vehicle out on the roads. But it is quite an unusual vehicle, and I'm wondering if Protos ever made any such tricycles/quadricycles themselves? Otherwise this was probably put together by someone procuring a Perfecta frame and a Protos engine.

The current owner bought this project disassembled, and the vehicle's earlier history is unfortunately unknown. He is also unsure about exactly how the engine should be assembled, and which parts are missing. If any readers happen to know of any information about this type of engine, this would be much appreciated. The owner would also love to come in contact with anyone with a similar engine, if there are any survivors.

Cheers from the Automobile Historic Club in Sweden.

Protos are not known to have produced any quads or tricycles as you intimate. The frame engine bearer brackets show that a Dechamps engine was originally fitted to this frame which is also quite a rarity as far as quads and tricycles are concerned. The Protos engine could be reinstated to a working condition but there would still be a great deal of re-engineering to mate the engine to the frame simply to produce an unlikely alliance.
