On the 12th of this month, auction house Aguttes will have a large number of magnifique voitures on offer in their Autumn Sale. Many of them are ready to drive home, but there are also some really nice projects to keep you busy during the cold winter months. Among them is a rare Delahaye Cabriolet Chapron with a Wilson preselector gearbox and a much sought-after Amilcar CGSS that needs a caretaker to bring it back to life.
This very rare surviving Delahaye Type 138 W is equipped with a Wilson preselector gearbox. Whereas most of Type 138s were delivered with ‘factory bodywork’, this cabriolet bodywork (number 4810) was made in Henri Chapron’s workshops in 1935. In the same year, on 21 March, this luxurious and elegant cabriolet was registered 3493 RJ 5 in the Seine department, for the famous French architect and urban planner Henri Prost. The auctioneer tells us that the car is in an incredibly good state of conservation. The doors do not show any play and the engine starts immediately. Likewise, the Wilson preselector gearbox works perfectly, and the braking — by cables — is still functional. Who would like to take on this project? If it's you, would you showcase the Delahaye at one of the Concours next year? Which class would you go — preservation or complete restoration?
Another French voiture offered in the same auction — which also needs some work to get it back on the road — is this 1929 Amilcar. It is the CGSS model, which has a shorter wheelbase than the CGS and a more powerful 1075cc engine, that reached speeds of up to 120km/h. Only around 984 examples were built between 1927 and 1929. This Amilcar cyclecar has been in the same hands for 40 years and we do hope that the new owner will be able to bring it back to life. The catalogue notes: “This chassis comes with its aerodynamic 'Eldridge' grille and its hood, so we can assume that the original body was made in the Duval workshops. Also present are the motorcycle-like front fenders, the radiator, the fuel tank, the dashboard and the windshield. As the rear leaf springs are missing, the axle was moved forward and bolted to the chassis to facilitate its movement.” Estimated at €7,000-€13,000, once this project is completed it will be a magnifique and much sought-after CGSS.
