PreWarCar of the week: 1921 Farman A6 Limousine

Please, take a look at the photo above. What make would you expect this is, a Bentley? No, it is a Farman. Perhaps you have never heard of the make Farman, not that strange as only around 120 are built. It was a French builder of luxurious cars. During Salon Retromobile, one of these stunning machines will be presented by Christoph Grohe. We would like to share some information with you about the car so you can impress the friends you are taking to the show.

The brothers Farman were very successful in producing aeroplanes. Their brand was established in 1909 and they were renown all over the world for their planes. In 1919 they started building luxurious automobiles in their Boulogne-Billancourt factory.

This impressive car weighs more than 2000 kg's but thanks to the 6,6-liter six-cylinder, it was (and is) still capable to reach a top speed of 140 km an hour.

Around 5 Farman cars appear to be still in existence, 2 of which are in the Mulhouse museum. This particular car is number 17 and is the oldest of the five survivors. The car was discovered in the 1950s by Henri Malatre. Since then it has been in the Reims Museum where they started restoring the car but they never completed. Christoph Grohe has worked hard to get the car ready in which he succeeded!

The plan was to sell the car during Salon Retromobile...

Update; Just as we were, someone else was also impressed with this beautiful Farman and the car didn't even make it to Paris as it was sold Yesterday! We hope the new owner will keep using the car. As we do like to share the information above, we kept this feature online. If you happen to be the lucky new owner, please get in contact with us. We would love to hear from you.

Lance, the engine you saw in Victoria is probably the same one that was on offer at the 2001 auction in Richmond, Victoria, at which Hans Compter bought the Fiat 519S that featured on today's home page. (the Riyadh auction).

I got it from Docteur Jeanson when I was working is his car Museum in the early 90's.

The car is in good hands now! The electrics had to be redone to an extent, unfortunately the ignition coil had died before we had a chance to start the engine this week (actually, while starting it…), so now it is being redone. Overall the car is getting the care to be in pristine condition and is about half way through. The engine’s hardware seems to be ok (but again, this can be assessed when its fired up), the coachwork, paint, all very good, interior as well. Only the electrics...

One more thing – the car’s label says it is number 53.

If anyone had any materials for Farman cars, engine schemes, workshop manuals, whatever, it would be nice if you contacted me!“

I believe that engine went to complete a Farman restoration in Spain, Lance.
