Smith & Waddington, Vanvooren, D’Ieteren, Van Rijswijk, Szawe, Waterhouse: you might find one of these coachbuilders in a magazine but all these rare companies being together in one issue is rather unique. Yet just that is what you will find in the new issue of Rare & Unique Vehicles.

It is now the third issue of this niche magazine and the quality is impressive to say it at least one more time. The theme sounds like music to our ears: PreWar Coachbuilding. They have covered 18 stories on various coachbuilding companies from Spain, Germany, the USA, the Netherlands, Italy, Hungary, Spain, China, and Poland. The articles are written by specialists (like ‘our own’ Jeroen Booij) and come with a sufficient amount of modern and period photos. There are the better-known companies like Vanvooren but have you ever heard of Baltasar Fiol. This became one of the most renowned coachbuilders in Spain in the 1920s. He was best known for his sporty and elegant lines, especially for vehicles built on a Hispano-Suiza chassis.

Another surprise for us was the Kellner company. No, not the French one. As we have now learned, there was another one in Germany, in Berlin to be more precise. The story is about Alexis Kellner, a traveller and writer whose sketches of car bodies were turned into metal and became a great success.
