Prepare to ride! (UPDATE: Excelsior Big X)

One of the pictures we received for our World Animal Day contest, was this rather faded one sent to us by Ruud Wesselink. It didn’t win, but we thought it too nice not to show you. Ruud tells us it’s his grandmother, posing on his father’s motorbike. The snapshot was taken somewhere in the 1920s in Holland. We think the motorcycle is a Henderson, but please tell us if we have it wrong.

Hello, I love this photo.

The bike is an Excelsior Big X, model 20R, 1000cc, made from 1920 - 1925. They were owned by the same company as Henderson, and were styled very similar to one another. Craig Gillingham

Not Henderson, but Excelsior "Big X", dating from somewhere between mid-1920 (when the separate generator appeared low down in front of the motor) and the final model in 1924 - not much changed over that period. Why? The parent company had purchased the Henderson company in 1918 and were busy producing and developiing the four-cylinder Henderson.

US made Excelsior, also known as Super-X to avoid confusion with european bikes with the same name.
Hendersons were four cylinders, but like Excelsiors twins they were manufactured by Schwinn Company.

This most definitely is not a Henderson, but an Excelsior from sometime in the early twenties (1921-1924?). The Logos for both companies are different and Henderson strictly made 4-cylinder motorcycles.
