Pre-Benz Italian engineering.

Many people have claimed the creation of the car. In Austria (Marcus), in the United States (Selden) in France (Delamare-Debouteville), in Germany (Benz). Normally - except with real insiders - the 1768 front wheel drive Cugnot is overlooked. But that was a steam car, and as it is generally accepted that the internal combustion engine is essential for the car as we know today, we were surprised to learn about this 1882 Italian machine, built by Enrico Bernardi, about which the Museo Bonfanti claims to be the first combustion engine of the world. A little research learns there was more under the sun in that time. Interesting that this nice machine is missing on this relatively complete list. So maybe they were not the first with this engine. Yet it must be a great comfort to the Italians that they at least can claim the invention of the first 'Automovile' by Leonardo Davinci in 1495 (!) or even better the one by Guido da Vigevano (1335)

Hello to everybody!
Merry Christmas! only one more day to go!

When it comes to internal combustion engines there is always something about national pride. Beeing Austrian I want to point out one name that seems almost totally forgotten. Check out Christian Reithmann, not even known to Austrians, was born close to my hometown in Tyrol.
Became a watchmaker in Munic and it seems that he was among the first who fiddled around with internal combustion engines. He even got an patent in 1860 but let it go in 1861. He got sued by Otto, Langen and Deutz and as it seemed the court would be in his favour he got some compensation for waiving his claim. Read the whole story in the GERMAN WIKIPEDIA, there is even an german book called "Als die Welt in Bewegung geriet"

Seasons Greetings from the winterly Tyrol

Editor: regarding national pride. two centuries(!) earlier than Reitman, Dutchman Christiaan Huygens was working on the internal combustion engine... http://inventors.about.com/library/weekly/aacarsgasa.htm

If you are surprised by a 1882 vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine, what will you say when you see this:
