Out for a ride

Mrs. Guy Henry in her Maxwell Tourer. That’s the information that came with this sunny shot. Oh, and that it was taken in Washington DC in around 1908. It’s very suitable for our ongoing Friday Lady series, we thought. The Maxwell Motor Company had a colourful history with some high peaks and deep lows before being merged into the Chrysler concern in 1925. It was even considered one of the top three automobile companies in America, along with General Motors and Ford, long before the phrase ‘the Big Three’ was used. This one here is believed to be an early Model L-type of around 1905.

But let’s go back to this photograph. The brick houses in the backdrop may have been quite new when this picture was taken. Perhaps the tree was being protected because of the construction traffic going up and down there. Anyone recognise the street?

Mrs. Henry looks to be riding rather than driving her Maxwell, which may well be fitting if she was the wife of Major General Guy Vernor Henry Jr. This Guy Henry was a senior officer in the US Army and the trainer of the Cavalry horses. He competed for the United States in the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm and later became Chef d’Equipe for the US Teams.
