Opening Doors

Brian Joseph from Classic and Exotic Service Inc. in Michigan mailed us photos of a Delage they are restoring. It’s a 1939 D8-120S cabriolet, built by Jacques Saoutchik for the Paris Auto Salon. The most interesting feature of this car is the doors that open like this (click!). During the war the Delage was kept at the Saoutchik workshop; later it was in use by the French Government. The Delage was prone to overheating and broke down during the Shah of Iran's visit to France in August of 1948. After this incident it was sold to Henri Henon, known as the builder of beautiful caravans. Over several years, the Delage was modified by Henon, including a post-war radiator shell, integrated headlights and bumpers that look very similar to those used by Chapron on many post-war Delages. Henon also added portholes on the hood and rocker to improve cooling while pulling the huge trailers he made. Classic and Exotic Service Inc. is now returning this Delage to its original configuration with the separate headlights, 1939 radiator shell, original bumper design and many other minor details. They have already gone to great lengths to keep the car as original as possible, but they are still searching for additional pictures and information about this fabulous Delage. Who knows more about the history of this unique automobile and/or has other pictures? Contact us (RB) (text and photos courtesy Classic and Exotic Service Inc.).
