One Mystery, a Renault, a Citroën and an Opel (UPDATE: Hispano Suiza)

Two weeks ago we showed you a Nash Quad in Holland. From the same man, Tony De Vries, come these pictures, printed from glass negatives - showing in front of De Vletter & Groenendijk in Rotterdam: "I can only identify one of them as an OPEL (last picture below). License plate on the big car is H 14039. Hope you can identify these cars for me."

Well we see a nice Edwardian Renault town car. Then a Citroën tourer (1919 Type A?). And then the Opel of course. Yet the big car in the main picture is not clear to us. The picture quality doesn't help with that, but still, it should be not too much of a problem.

I bought my first prewar cars in 1971, after spotting one outside an historic church in Llerida, Spain in 1970, where it was taking part in a funeral, an Hispano Suiza made in Barcelona. I was looking into the name spread across the radiator grill as that in the picture, and bought 2 of them for 500 pounds, 1928 and 1937 models.

Rutger Booy, Yes, the photo you've supplied is horrible - depressing. It's difficult today to think that De Vletter & Groenendijk could be proud of this new bodywork.

If you want to see something really horrible, go to the website of the Dutch Society of Automotive Historians. There's a picture of probably the very same Hispano with a new and sporting bodywork. You have come to the right man to ask - absolutely certain, this is an early Hispano-Suiza H6, possibly with coachwork by Van den Plas of Brussels. Give me some time and I might even identify the chassis number of this H6. Great photo!

The car in the main picture is an early H6 Hispano Suiza. The Renault may be an EU Type.

Horacio.

The big car looks like an early 20's Hispano Suiza.

At first glance the big car is a Hispano-Suiza, an early one maybe circa 1922.
