The first car in Romania was a ...? (UPDATE: 1901 Braun voiturette)

Bogdan Coconoiu from Romania writes: "A friend of mine, mr. Madalin Ghigeanu, sent me this interesting photo probably from 1900. We supose that the driver is mr.  Basil Assan the first romanian car owner. To me the car looks like a De Dion but please ask the readers of your site in order to identify corectly this vehicle. On 27th June we organise the 5th edition of Sinaia Concours d'Elegance, I will send you a short report and photos."

regarding #1.

Starting handle is almost horizontal in the picture (and thus poorly visible)

The car retains the orginal De Dion gear change actuation by hand wheel, as a De Dion 'D' type. It is rare to see this system still fitted on cars driven today, most have been converted.
I have personal experience of this arrangement and can confirm it is couterintuitive!

Although the car has a steering and handling system similar to De Dion, the rest of the car is very much different with the engine located beneath the front seats, What we see is a Braun voiturette probably of 1901, produced by Aug. Braun u. Comp. from Vienna. The 1901 model was described in the December 23, 1900 issue of the Allgemeine Automobil-Zeitung and is almost identical except for the extra cooling arrangement at the front of the voiturette. This was probably a later and necessary adaption because engines tended to overheat rather easily during these days. How it was started remains unclear from the description. A starting handle is not visible, but obviously is in the improved model.
