Monday mystery: a capacious car for Edwardian tourists

We were pleased to receive a message recently from Steven Miles, who said: "I have this old photo from circa 1905-1915 and I'm trying to establish the make and model of the car. Please can you help?"

You've come to the right place, Mr. Miles. Identifying ancient and obscure cars is our speciality or, to be more truthful, the speciality of our readers, and we'll be delighted to have a go at solving this mystery.

It helps that we have a very clear view of the car, although there are really no clues as to its origins apart from the AR registration number, which tells us that it was first registered in Hertfordshire. It seems it belong to a large and well-to-do family, and from their relaxed demeanour we get the impression that they were the sort of Edwardians who enjoyed sedate motoring as a kind of leisure activity. No doubt this car was taken out for a canter to a picnic on more than one occasion, and maybe it even undertook one or two long touring holidays around the Lake District or somewhere similarly picturesque.

Unfortunately, these suppositions don't bring us any closer to identifying the car. One thing we might say, on account of the car's substantial bodywork, is that it almost certainly dates from a few years after 1905, probably not earlier than 1908. We might also add that the car could very well be of European origin rather than British.

With such a clear shot of the car, we're certain one of our readers will know exactly what the make and model is, and maybe even pinpoint it to a particular year. Over to you...
