It’s Lieutenant Gruber! — that was our first thought upon seeing this great photograph. Gruber was, of course, the openly homosexual comic character in 'Allo 'Allo!’ who famously tried to persuade café owner René to come for a drive in his ‘little tank’.
But this here is no comic character. Although little information is known, this is a genuine picture taken around 1920, so during the inter-war years. And that tracked vehicle being demonstrated to US Army Officers is indeed a Ford Model T with a wacky conversion. The vehicle’s licence plate is supposedly a New York plate turned around with ‘US ARMY - ORD DEPT’ (Ordinance Department) written on it and it looks as if the little Ford just took a dive into the mud.
Some sources say the location is Washington DC, others think it Detroit. Opinions are equally split about the man behind the wheel. Secretary of War Newton Baker, says one. Henry Ford himself, says the other. We don’t know. We do wonder how on earth the steering works though!
